And now for today’s Black History fact… The first public high school for African Americans, Paul Laurence Dunbar High, opened in Washington, D.C. in 1870, just five years after the end of the Civil War. Named after Dunbar, the acclaimed Black writer, the school graduated many influential individuals including the first Black Army General, the first Black presidential cabinet member and the first Black graduate of the Naval Academy. Many high schools, including Dunbar Vocational High School in Chicago, have also adopted Dunbar’s name. This concludes your moment in Black History.

Ava DuVernay won many Emmy, BAFTA and Peabody Awards, but one award that stood out to her was the directing award in the U.S. dramatic competition at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival for her second feature film Middle of Nowhere, becoming the first black woman to win the award. In 1968 Shirley Chisolm became the first black woman elected to the United States congress.
