And now for today’s Black History fact… Dr. Mae Jemison is a physician and scientist who, in 1992, became the first Black woman astronaut in space. After attending Stanford and Cornell Universities, she served as a medical officer in the Peace Corps. In June 1987, she achieved a lifelong dream when she became the first Black woman to be admitted into NASA’s astronaut training program. Jemison made history again on September 12, 1992, when she flew into space aboard the Endeavour on mission STS47 and became the first Black woman in space. In recognition of her accomplishments, Jemison has received several awards and honorary doctorates. Today, she works as a scientist and public speaker. This concludes your moment in Black History.

And now for today’s Black History fact… Granville Tailer Woods was an American inventor who held more than 50 patents in the United States. He was the first African American mechanical and electrical engineer after the Civil War. Self-taught, he concentrated most of his work on trains and streetcars. One of his inventions is the Synchronous Multiplex Railway Telegraph, a variation of the induction telegraph that relied on ambient static electricity from existing telegraph lines to send messages between train stations and moving trains. And now for today’s Black History fact… Sojourner Truth was an African American evangelist, abolitionist, women’s rights activist and author who was born into slavery before escaping to freedom in 1826. After gaining her freedom, Truth preached about abolitionism and equal rights for all. She became known for a speech with the famous refrain, "Ain't I a Woman?" that she was said to have delivered at a women's convention in Ohio in 1851. Truth continued her crusade throughout her adult life, earning an audience with President Abraham Lincoln and becoming one of the world’s best-known human rights crusaders. And now for today’s Black History fact…Edward Kennedy Ellington, better known as Duke Ellington, was an iconic African American pianist and jazz composer. He began playing the piano at seven years old, and his childhood friends gave him the nickname "Duke'' because of his elegant and flashy sense of style. When he grew up, he and his friends formed a band called "The Washingtonians'', and later his band became an orchestra of over 15 members, and they performed numerous times at The Cotton Club, gaining them overwhelming fame. Ellington was given many honoraries and awards including 16 doctorates, a gold medal from Linden B. Johnson, the medal of freedom from Richard Nixon, and the French Legion of Honor. He also has a star on the Hollywood walk of fame and 13 Grammys. This concludes your moment in Black History.

And now for today’s Black History fact…Juneteenth, also known as Black Independence Day or Emancipation Day, is a holiday that celebrates freedom, the end of the Civil War, and African-American culture. It commemorates the day in June 1865—two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation—when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War was over and enslaved people were free. It started off as a celebration for freed African-Americans in Texas but eventually grew to be a celebration for all Americans. And now for today’s Black History fact… Many people learn about Rosa Parks fighting for desegregation on a Montgomery, Alabama bus—but they may not learn about Claudette Colvin, a young girl who did it before Parks. In 1955, at just 15 years old, she stayed seated and refused to move to the back of the bus for a White passenger. She was subsequently arrested. Colvin had learned about the plight of Harriet Tubman and other early activists in school before her arrest. This concludes your moment in Black History.
