Resume Writing Tips
Writing a resume can be challenging when you don't have much or any prior work experience. Looking at sample resumes and reading tips on what to include can make it easier.
You probably have more to include on your resume than you think. Even if you don't have any paid work experience, you can include other types of work, such as babysitting, lawn mowing, and volunteer work.
Make an Outline: Make a list of all possible experiences to include in your resume before you start writing.
Keep it Short: Your resume doesn't need to be longer than a page. Include your name, contact information, activities, work experience, and skills that are related to the jobs that you're applying for.
Include Informal Work Experience: If you haven’t had any formal work experience, include things like babysitting, lawn mowing, raking leaves, or anything you've done to make money.
Include Your Activities: Since most high school students haven't held many jobs, it could be helpful to include activities that show you have the right character, work ethic, skills, and personality to succeed in a job.
- Include extracurricular activities, volunteer work, academics, and athletics. If you've held any leadership positions (such as officer of a club or sports team captain), be sure to include that information.
Promote Yourself: Employers are interested in your work habits and attitude. They understand if you don’t have a lot of experience.
- If you have a perfect or near perfect attendance, you can include something such as: "Maintained a perfect (or near perfect) attendance record" when describing an experience.
