Philosophy & Literature: Philosophy literally means, "love of wisdom."  We will be exploring many aspects of this multi-faceted discipline:  metaphysics, logic, epistemology, aesthetics, ethics, and political philosophy.  We will survey in chronological order all of the major philosophers of Western Civilization, from the Pre-Socratics to the Existentialists.  We will also study brain teasers, popular fallacies, ethical dilemmas, and debates on controversial issues in an effort to produce wiser young citizens.  In the words of Will Durant:  "Philosophy is the front trench in the siege of truth."
English 1RSR-track courses are designed with college-level expectations in mind.  Reading, Writing, and Research are the primary focus, while a strong emphasis is also placed on Grammar and Vocabulary.  Major readings will include Romeo & Juliet, Fahrenheit 451, Night, and Of Mice and Men.  Other units include short fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and a glimpse at epic poetry (from Homer's Odyssey).  Writing assignments will include a Research Essay, two lyric poems, and other persuasive and expository essays.
