Avenel Street School is determined to engage the entire community by offering a learning environment that fosters independence, embraces change, and values diversity. We develop lifelong learners who are responsible citizens prepared to enter the global society. Avenel Street School is comprised of approximately 480 students who are in grade kindergarten through grade five. We possess over fifty staff members ranging from custodians, secretaries, practitioners, and administrators.
Character Education is a top priority at Avenel Street School. The Tiger Token System rewards students on a daily basis for exemplary behavior. Students exchange Tiger Tokens for monthly celebrations. This ensures a safe school environment where we embrace a Zero Tolerance Policy. To this end, during Student of the Month assemblies, pupils who epitomize the traits of the Six Pillars of Character Education are recognized and celebrated.
Philanthropic efforts include the annual Hoops for Happiness Charity Event, which is a huge success and generates over $3,000.00 for various causes. An altruistic attitude is displayed when students visit with senior citizens at the Maple Tree Senior Citizens Home.
A collaborative effort among our Parent Teacher Organization (P.T.O.) and the staff-at-large is an essential component of our success. The P.T.O. is tireless when raising funds for meaningful and educational class trips, assemblies, chorus performances, and technology purchases. Families and staff alike devote countless hours to the well-being of our beloved students.
Avenel Street School is committed to meeting the needs of each and every student. We offer students with services including academic support instruction, speech therapy, Child Study team intervention, and an off-site Gifted and Talented program.
Providing our students with an individualized and appropriate education is paramount. All instruction is aligned with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards, Strands, and Cumulative Progress Indicators. The kindergarten through grade five programs encompass the following: a balanced literacy approach to language arts instruction (reading, writing, and word study), mathematics, social studies, science, health, physical education, technology, library/literacy technology, art, vocal music, instrumental music, and guidance.
Moreover, Everyday Mathematics is a comprehensive Pre-K through grade six mathematics curriculum developed by the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project. It concentrates on providing students with true-to-life problem solving, whole-class, small-group, and independent learning, technology, and the home-to-school connection. At School 4 and 5, we emphasize higher-level thinking skills in the area of mathematics instruction. This is evident in our improved NJ ASK scores.
An innovative balanced literacy approach is the paradigm that is used during the language arts block. Balanced literacy incorporates reading strategies and phonics instruction that enable students to become proficient readers during all reading. It employs the fundamentals of letter-sound recognition, word study, and decoding as well as holistic and natural reading experiences in reading, speaking, writing, and listening. By integrating a variety of approaches during Reading and Writing Workshop, balance is achieved when students learn to make meaning from text and become proficient writers and spellers. The teacher constructs a scaffold, which increases responsibility of the student while providing support through teacher modeling, shared learning, and small group instruction. Families and staff are involved in Literacy Evenings and Reading Celebrations. Students perform authentic songs that incorporate reading and writing fundamentals.
Furthermore, science and social studies is infused into daily instruction through cross-curricular activities. Engaging, hands-on science experiments provide students with real-life science opportunities. As a culminating school-wide event, students engage in a simulated trip to another country during Passport Day.
In addition to a comprehensive instructional system, Avenel Street School offers a variety of ancillary opportunities. Some of the highlights include: Honor Roll, D.A.R.E., Safety Patrols, Intramural Kickball, Morning Fitness, Tutorial Program, Breakfast Program, Voluntary Reading Coaches, Track Team, and the Helping Hands Club.
Avenel Street School serves as a model of academic and social excellence. Senior high school students who attend Colonia and Woodbridge High Schools, and student teachers from Rutgers University and Kean University intern with our practitioners. This is an invaluable experience for staff, students, and interns. Interns interact with our students during supervised instructional procedures.
Our school-wide goal is to provide all of our beloved students with a solid education. This is a shared mission among families, staff, and students. Avenel Street School is an educational culture that promotes integrity and scholastic superiority. It is our mission to bestow our students with a promising future.
