Mawbey
St. School #1
Mawbey Street Elementary School believes that our mission is to engage the entire community in providing a learning environment that fosters independence, embraces change, and values diversity. We hope to develop, through a technology infused curriculum, lifelong learners who are responsible citizens prepared to enter the global society. Students come to Mawbey Street School for one thing, to learn. Everyone has the right to come to school in a safe environment free from discrimination. As educators, we are compelled to provide this type of atmosphere on a daily basis. Embracing our culturally diverse differences enhances our tolerance and broadens our acceptance of others.
The instructional program at Mawbey Street School is consistent with all elementary schools in Woodbridge Township. The language arts literacy curricula include skill and strategy experiences to encourage student development as fluent readers, writers, speakers, listeners and viewers. Literacy First, the district’s innovative first and second grade Reading and Writing Workshop program, combines best practices in language arts, including shared, guided and independent reading; reflective journaling; word study; and independent writing/conferencing and strategy groups to achieve the goal of primary literacy for all students. In the mathematics and science content areas, programs encourage enjoyment, the acquisition of important concepts, and the development of reasoning and problem-solving skills. Health and physical education programs promote each student’s physical, mental, emotional, and social development as well as an understanding of health problems and issues that impact the quality of life. Social studies and world languages provide students with the tools to understand and appreciate the values and principles of American democracy and culture, in addition to a respect for and appreciation of other languages and cultures.
In seeking to meet the needs of all of our students, Mawbey Street School offers a strong Academic Support Instruction program in language arts and mathematics which generates a variety of classroom and school-wide projects to encourage increased student motivation and family involvement. Speech, child study team services, special education services, occupational and physical therapy, and an off-site gifted and talented program are also offered. Mawbey Street School is home to self-contained special education classes, where students receive mainstream instruction in physical education, performing and visual arts, mathematics and reading/writing workshop.
All students at Mawbey Street Elementary School enjoy daily access to the school's wireless computer lab, which consists of sixty laptop computers circulating among the various grade level classrooms. Teachers provide opportunities for students to master a variety of programs and software formats. This includes the utilization of Study Island and Learnia. Both web-based programs provide practice in math, science and reading for students in the third, fourth and fifth grades. Each year students design, implement, and organize presentations for parents and community members. Children also create and exhibit personal digital portfolios to document their experiences at Mawbey Street School.
Student-led organizations include Student Council and the Community of Caring Club. Both groups provide opportunities for children to participate actively and prepare for the challenges of a global society. Through Student Council participation, representatives from all grades meet on a regular basis and organize school spirit activities, fundraisers and service-learning projects. Service-learning opportunities include Coats for Kids; holiday food drives; craft and greeting card programs; initiatives for foster children and area developmental centers; the American Heart Association's Jump Rope for Heart; the American Cancer Society Mini Relay for Life; the St. Jude Math-A-Thon; and the annual Marine Corps Toys for Tots Drive. Additionally, fifth-grade student’s volunteer as lunch and bus monitors, read regularly in the primary classrooms, assist with technology projects and participate in a variety of cross-age tutoring programs. The Community of Caring initiative sponsors monthly spirit assemblies, designed to encourage the development of the core values of caring, respect, responsibility, trust and family.
Adult members of the school community model the core values and provide the children with opportunities to practice the Mawbey Street School Code of Conduct. Behavior agreements based on the core values provide a foundation in personal responsibility for all children. Mawbey Street School recognizes academic success through Honor Roll and encourages good behavior through a Student of the Month recognition program. School display areas feature family photos, student work samples and children’s ideas on how to improve interpersonal relations. Teachers, paraprofessionals, and aides pursue personal growth through district professional development opportunities and school-sponsored training and articulation programs in technology, literacy, mathematics, health and science-related topics as well as differentiated instruction. Mawbey Street School also partners with Woodbridge High School to sponsor aspiring teachers (TAP program) by providing opportunities for teenagers to serve as apprentices under the guidance of certified classroom teachers.
We are proud to have a strong and supportive Parent Teacher Organization at Mawbey Street School. They conduct many activities designed to enrich the social and academic lives of the children. Parent volunteers regularly assist in the library and in classrooms. They also prepare and serve a homemade Thanksgiving Feast, sponsor numerous fundraisers, subsidize transportation for school trips, provide educational assembly programs, organize and conduct Field Day, and sponsor a Spring School Beautification Project.
At Mawbey Street Elementary School we believe that every student will learn. The school faculty, staff, and administration are committed to providing children with the best possible education and it is our responsibility to meet the needs of each individual student. Our major focus is to provide opportunities for academic success for every student as assessed by the NCLB standards. Incorporating the goals of our Professional Learning Communities, our students and staff have worked diligently to achieve excellence in many areas and we will continue to analyze our standardized test scores in an effort to provide our students with the type of instruction that is necessary to develop their test taking skills and achieve 100% proficiency on the NJ ASK test
