Purpose

The school store was created to give students an opportunity to learn how to run all aspects of a retail business from accounting to marketing. The school store gets its items from different organizations and clubs. It is a place where school spirit items can be displayed and sold. Some of the items sold at the school store include pens, pencils, notebooks, tissues, t-shirts, sweatshirts, mylar balloons and cards. The Top Hat also has a copier and laminating machine for student use.

Becoming an Employee

Students can work at the school store before school, during their lunch period, and after school. The process includes filling out an application and being interviewed.

Hands-on Training

Student employees begin hands-on training immediately. They are given a manual which describes duties and responsibilities in detail. Employees learn how to greet customers, offer customer assistance, restock shelves and work a cash register. Employees work on the marketing aspects of business by creating and maintaining counter displays, designing flyers and print ads. Students also learn the accounting aspects of running a business by keeping inventory and recording a daily sales log. In addition, students learn how to properly handle any refunds, voids, and exchanges. Students reinforce their mathematical and social skills by working at the Top Hat School Store.
