The Mathematics
section of the HSPA is divided into three parts.
Each part consists of
10 multiple choice and 2 open-ended questions. Students are given
40 minutes to complete each section.

Language Arts Section
Three Paragraph Answer Needed.
The student is presented with a quote, adage, or situation. In the response, the student must explain the prompt (first paragraph), provide examples from his/her life (second paragraph), and then connect the topic to history, science, or literature (third paragraph).
2. Narrative Reading Section – 50 minutes
Approximately six page reading followed by 10 multiple-choice questions and two open-ended questions.
The student reads a story and answers ten multiple-choice questions to prove his/her comprehension. Also, the student writes two open-ended responses answering all bullet points. The student must connect the topic to a world issue.
3. Persuasive Reading Section – 45 minutes
Approximately four page reading followed by 10 multiple-choice questions and two open-ended questions.
The student reads a persuasive (aim is to change the way the reader thinks or acts) article and answers ten multiple-choice questions to prove comprehension. Also, the student writes two open-ended responses answering all bullet points. The student must connect the topic to a world issue.
4. Persuasive Essay Section – 60 minutes
Five paragraph essay is needed as an answer.
The student is presented with a writing prompt that explains a controversial situation. The student is asked to complete a writing task where he/she must AGREE or DISAGREE with the controversial issue. Within the essay the student must supply three logical reasons why he/she agrees or disagrees with the topic.
